About Pare: Free Meal Planning for Everyone
Pare is a free meal planning and pantry management tool designed to help you cook smarter, waste less food, and eat better every day.
Our Mission
We believe meal planning shouldn't be complicated. Pare connects your pantry to your recipes to your shopping list — so you always know what you have, what you can cook, and what you need to buy. No more forgotten ingredients, no more food waste.
What Pare Does
Pantry Tracking
Keep track of everything in your kitchen. Add items manually, scan receipts with AI, or quick-add a list of ingredients. Get alerts before food expires.
Recipe Management
Import recipes from any URL, paste text, upload a CSV, or enter them manually. Pare extracts ingredients and instructions automatically.
What Can I Cook?
Get AI-powered meal suggestions based on what's already in your pantry. Discover recipes you can make right now with ingredients you have on hand.
Meal Planning
Plan your meals across any date range. Assign recipes to days and meal types, then generate a shopping list with one click.
Smart Shopping Lists
Auto-generated shopping lists that account for what you already have. Order directly from Instacart, Walmart, or Amazon Fresh with one tap.
Why We Built Pare
Most meal planning apps start with recipes and work backwards. They give you a library of meals to browse, generate a shopping list, and send you to the store. But they ignore the most important question: what do you already have?
The average household has $300–600 worth of food at any given time, yet 30–40% of food in the U.S. goes to waste. The biggest reason? People don't know what's in their own kitchen. They buy duplicates, forget about expiring items, and default to takeout because cooking feels harder than ordering.
Pare was designed to fix this loop. It starts with your pantry — what you actually have — and works forward to what you can cook, what you need to buy, and where to get it delivered. Every feature connects to the next: pantry → recipes → meal plan → shopping list → delivery.
How Pare Is Different
Unlike traditional meal planning apps that lock features behind subscriptions, Pare is completely free. No premium tiers, no trial periods, no feature gates. We support the site through advertising, which allows us to keep every feature accessible to everyone.
Pare also requires no account creation. You don't need to sign up, verify an email, or create a password. Your data is associated with your browser session, so you can start using every feature immediately — pantry tracking, recipe management, meal planning, and shopping lists. Just open the app and go.
The AI-powered features are what truly set Pare apart. Our "What Can I Cook?" engine analyzes your pantry contents and matches them against your saved recipes, showing you exactly what you can make right now and what you're just one or two ingredients away from. It can also generate creative recipe ideas tailored to your specific combination of ingredients — meals you might never have thought to make.
The Technology Behind Pare
Pare uses modern AI to make kitchen management effortless. Our natural language processing lets you add pantry items by typing a freeform list like "eggs, milk, 2 lbs chicken, garlic" — the AI parses this into structured inventory items with quantities, categories, and units.
Receipt scanning uses computer vision to extract items from a photo of your grocery receipt, automatically adding them to your pantry. Recipe import works on any website — paste a URL and Pare extracts the title, ingredients, instructions, cook time, and servings.
All of this runs in the background so you can focus on what matters: cooking good food and wasting less of it.
Our Values
Free for Everyone
Meal planning shouldn't be a luxury. Every feature in Pare is free, and we intend to keep it that way. Good nutrition tools should be accessible to everyone, regardless of budget.
Reduce Food Waste
We measure our success by how much food we help people use instead of throw away. Every pantry item tracked, every recipe matched, every shopping list generated is a step toward less waste.
Simplicity Over Features
We build features that solve real problems, not features that look good on a comparison chart. If a feature doesn't make your kitchen life easier, we don't build it.
Privacy by Default
No account required means no personal data collected. We don't track your eating habits, sell your data, or build profiles. Your kitchen is your business.
The Story Behind Pare
Pare didn't start as a business plan. It started as a recurring frustration: standing in front of a full fridge and pantry, still not knowing what to make for dinner — and then ordering takeout while perfectly good ingredients quietly expired in the back of a shelf.
The name “Pare” captures the idea. To pare something down is to trim it back to what matters. We wanted a tool that strips meal planning back to its most useful question — what can I actually make right now? — instead of burying you in endless recipe feeds and subscription upsells.
The frustration
Too much food wasted, too many duplicate grocery runs, and too many nights defaulting to delivery despite a stocked kitchen.
The first prototype
A simple pantry list that could match ingredients against saved recipes. The moment it surfaced a meal we could cook with zero extra shopping, the idea clicked.
Connecting the loop
We linked pantry, recipes, meal plans, and shopping lists into one flow — and added AI for receipt scanning, recipe import, and creative meal ideas.
Free for everyone
Rather than gate it behind a subscription, we made every feature free and account-free, so anyone can open Pare and start cooking smarter today.
Who Builds Pare
Pare is built by a small, independent team of home cooks and engineers — not a large corporation with investors to answer to. That independence is exactly why we can keep Pare free, keep it private, and build only the features that genuinely make your kitchen life easier.
Being small also means your feedback reaches the people actually building the product. When you email us a bug or a feature idea, it goes straight to the team — and it shapes what we build next. Pare gets better because the people who use it tell us what a real kitchen needs.
Meet the Team
Pare is a genuinely small operation. The same people who design and build the app also cook dinner every night, test every feature in their own kitchens, and write the guides you read on our blog.
Danielle Cho
Founder & Editor
Danielle started Pare after one too many nights ordering takeout in front of a full fridge. A lifelong home cook, she now spends her time testing pantry-first cooking ideas and writing about how to waste less without spending more. She edits every guide on the Pare blog.
Marcus Vance
Food Waste & Sustainability Writer
Marcus cooked on restaurant lines for six years before trading the pass for a keyboard. He writes about reducing food waste, storing groceries so they actually last, and the small kitchen habits that add up to real savings. He tests every tip in his own (often chaotic) home kitchen.
Priya Menon
Meal Prep & Budget Writer
Priya feeds a busy family of four on a tight weekly budget, which makes her the resident expert on batch cooking, freezer planning, and stretching a grocery run. She writes practical, tested meal-planning guides for people who don't have hours to spend in the kitchen.
Where Pare Is Headed
We're just getting started. Our roadmap is focused on making the pantry-to-plate loop even more seamless:
- Shared lists & households — sync your pantry and shopping list with the people you cook for.
- Offline access — check your pantry and lists even without a connection at the store.
- Smarter suggestions — meal ideas that factor in what's expiring soon, so nothing goes to waste.
- More delivery options — order missing ingredients from even more grocery partners in a couple of taps.
